Our Green initiative - Upper Clements Cottages & RV Park
Our commitment to our guests:
Here at UCCRVP, we are committed to offer you the best experience possible and we are working hard to keep our property as pristine and as inviting as possible. We are working with our staff, providers and guests to leave to our children a greener world.
The sustainability of our operation is of the most importance for us and we are taking every opportunity to do so. As an example, we are keeping a big field not mowed to help bees and beekeepers alike.
This year we are adding an Electric Vehicle charger at the office parking lot for our guests to use.

Light pollution:
We do our best to reduce light pollution at night by using timers, downward reflective lighting as well as reduce glare lighting. We are lucky to be close to the Dark Sky Preserve of Kejimkujik. Next time you are in, look up and enjoy! |
What we are doing:
Staff: Every member of our staff is educated to look for energy leaks, reduce energy expenses and report opportunities to reduce power consumption. We have in place a sustainable and green purchasing policy for the business as well as for ourselves. We are running a paperless business as much as possible. Work orders and daily schedules are made on mobile devices. All receipts and forms are transmitted by email/text messages. Laundry detergent is bought in bulk and mixed in house to fit with the necessary washing needs. Clotheslines are used to dry linens when practical to do so. All cleaning products and disinfectants are also bought in bulk and diluted following the recommended recipe. Water And Electric: Every tap is fitted with low flow and aerator. Every toilet is also low flow flush. Every shower heads are high efficiency and low flow. Water heaters are insulated and shut down when not in use. Bulbs in each cottages are low consumption or LED. Common areas have LED lighting, timers or occupancy operated lighting. Every appliances, in cottages as well as in the laundry rooms are Energy Star approved. The pool is heated with a heat pump and a solar blanket is used every day. A review is done periodically to look for unforeseen electric leaking. Recycling and Waste: Each cottage has its own 4 way sorting station for proper recycling and waste. Every Eco-Stations on the property are equipped with sorting facilities. We are returning as many refundable products as possible to keep those containers out of the garbage. Maintenance: Every buildings are submitted to a monthly audit, inspection and cleaning to keep everything as efficient as possible. Each vehicle is inspected and kept up with emission programs. Water leaks are checked each month through meter reading all across the property. Wood bricks from local sourcing are used in the wood stove in the reception area. Gardens and grounds: Most of our plants are native to the area and the need for watering is minimal. Grass is cut regularly to keep it looking good and to reduce the fuel consumption required when it is overgrown. Mowing is done with a mulching adapter so the clippings are put back to provide nutrients. Surface waters are controlled by using them to water grass and the overflow is brought to the pond. Most surfaces of the property are water permeable so heavy water run-off is not needed. Cottages: Each cottage has a full kitchen and fully furnished cupboards. Everything is reusable. Each bathroom has refillable soap and shampoo dispensers. Dish cloths and tea towels are provided instead of paper towels. Local community: We thrive to source our supplies, materials and labour from local sources and from the community. We are working with local organizations to re-purpose furniture and linens from our operations. 3Rs: As a business, we firmly believe in the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle credo. As operators, we are abiding to those principles in every decision and action we make. A nice example of that is the deck under the Maple tree which is made of reuse deck parts, recycled plastic mounts and new material. |
